Jobs for Family Promise of Forsyth County
Homelessness in Forsyth County is a serious problem affecting nearly 4,000 people. According to the Carolina Homeless Information Network, last year 650 families with nearly 740 children were homeless. Families most often find themselves homeless, not because of poor character, but because they cannot find affordable housing, have lost jobs, experienced financially devastating medical emergencies, escaped domestic violence and more. Sadly, when these families experience such a crisis, homeless shelters will separate their family, sending teenage boys and men to different shelters from mothers and daughters. Family Promise of Forsyth County is a new non-profit organization whose mission is to address homelessness in our community one family at a time. By offering compassionate guidance, shelter and education through a network of interfaith congregations and community organizations, our goal is to strengthen our community by helping homeless families with children transition into self sufficiency, while remaining intact. Eight congregations in Forsyth County have already committed to join our Interfaith Hospitality Network as host congregations. Host congregations donate space to provide overnight accommodations for homeless families for one week every two or three months on a rotating basis. Volunteers from participating congregations prepare dinner, read stories to young children, help parents with resumes, play games, talk and listen. Other volunteers stay overnight and provide breakfast. Each morning, the families are transported by van to a day center, located in Kernersville, where Family Promise's director and social worker help them address their critical needs and find transitional/permanent housing and jobs. Our goal is to have 13 host congregations. Several other congregations are currently considering participation, and we would welcome any others who are interested.
